5 Ways of Preventing Gas Explosion at Home

How to Avoid a Gas Explosion at Home

1) Turning the  gas cylinder off when not in use

We do turn off the (cooktop) burner after use. It is very healthy and safe practice. However, turning off the regulator of the cylinder is an add-on habit that every kitchen should adopt to ensure extra safety.

Turning off the gas supply at the source along with the turned off stove or burner is what adds up to the overall safety. This will help decrease the chances of gas leakage while the setup is left unmonitored.

2) Checking the gas appliances on a regular basis

Checking the cooking appliances and monitoring them for regular wear and tear is an excellent habit as well. Every appliance is prone to wear and tear with usage over a period of time. Checking the same and making necessary replacements of parts and accessories will help prevent mishaps. The burner, stove, cylinder regulator, gas pipe, etc. need to be checked on a regular basis to ensure that everything is in proper working condition.

3) Checking the gas cylinder at the time of delivery

Checking the cylinder at the time of delivery is very important. Refrain from accepting the delivery in case the seal is broken. Weighing the cylinder and getting the valve on the cylinder checked by the delivery person is a good way of ensuring that the cylinder is safe to be used. Additionally, you can check the due date for the test which is usually marked on the inner side of the cylinder. The alphabet denotes the quarter when the date is due. The letter is followed by a number which denotes the year when the test is due. Thus, if the letter is A, it stands for March; if it is B, it stands for June; C stands for September; and D stands for December. If you need further assistance for the same, you can get in touch with your gas cylinder provider as well.

4) Regular checking of cylinders from the LPG agency

You can always get in touch with your respective LPG agency and get professional help for the check-up of your cylinder, gas line, or appliances. The professionals do not only check the standards as per their checking protocol, but also provide additional safety training and tips and tricks to help you at times of problems. Based on their report and recommendations, you can also get your appliances changed if it seems to be striking a problem or is liable to create an unwanted situation in the future.

5) Taking preventive measures in the case of a gas leak

In the unfortunate situation of a gas leak, stay calm and follow a few simple steps to avoid mishaps of any sort. Gas leaks are usually easy to figure out at an early stage due to the presence of a foul smell in the LPG. You can simply follow the steps mentioned below as soon as you smell gas:

Open all the doors and windows of your house.

Turn off the regulator on the cylinder, if it is not already turned off.

Check the cylinder to find out if the regulator is rightly attached. If it is loose or is not fixed properly, release the lock and refix the regulator. Try to find out if there are any hissing or leaking noises.

Do not switch on lights or fans in the house.

Avoid lighting cigarettes, matches, lighters, or any appliances.

Do not turn on the stove or burner when the gas is leaking.

Call for help immediately if the problem seems to persist.
